Some of this music mixing software has a high learning curve, so make sure you read the reviews and user comments before making a purchase. New mixing software is released all the time, and manufacturers are continuously releasing newer versions, upgrades, updates, and patches (some of which are free and some not), making it difficult to keep up with what is available and what has been discontinued.

Most musicians purchase more music software than they can possibly use for mixing because they won’t take the time to read the user manuals and discover all the features available, thus thinking they have to buy the latest release of everything. Much of the music software available can also be used for recording, mixing, and mastering if you take advantage of all the features, making it unnecessary to purchase multiple software packages.

It is also important to keep in mind that there is a difference between recording / mixing / mastering software, soft synths, virtual instruments, and plug-ins. The mixing software is generally used to record the source tracks (e.g. vocals, bass, guitar, keyboards, etc) and then those tracks are edited using the music software to apply effects, set volume levels, pan the sounds, etc. Soft synths are software versions of hardware synthesizers (some known and some newly-invented) whose sounds can be manipulated in the computer using the software. Virtual instruments are sampled live instruments that are played into the sequencer (music mixing software) using a keyboard, drum pad, or guitar. Plug-ins are generally effects (compressors, equalizers, reverbs, delays, etc) that can be applied to your tracks in order to manipulate the sounds and make them ‘sit’ better in the mix.
